Doe and Buck Study

Unusual to have the opportunity to see the bucks... usually they bury themselves in the brush and are more elusive. I wonder if this spike buck is just coming back to see his Mom,or if he is a hopeful suiter.

As One of the series of Denman Island Deer Studies... before I can paint in high chroma colour, I am best to totally understand how the structure and textures are expressed with "real" colours... Especially since I work with a sculptor's mind... taking a figure and figuring out where the bones and tendons are, where the muscle is, and the quality of expressiveness that each particular deer has, really helps me. After I understand all this, I can easily jump into my intutive methods of high chroma painting.
